Callum Davidson has pleaded with the Preston board not to sell Deepdale's crown jewels.
The experienced Scot is fighting fit again after missing North End's
play-off charge last season through injury.

Davidson flew out with the squad today for the pre-season fitness camp in Austria.

But the ex-Blackburn man says he is worried Preston could be tempted to sell their prize assets, with Celtic boss Tony Mowbray linked with Sean St Ledger while Nottingham Forest remain hot on the trail of captain Paul McKenna.

Davidson said: "We've always had to sell players and that's a fact of life for us, but it is also deeply frustrating for the squad and the supporters when it does happen.

"Sometimes you know the team is only short of a couple of good players to make it an excellent one, so when a top player leaves then that's quite difficult to take.

"We must try everything to keep our best players because that's imperative if we are going to keep moving forward.

"I thought the boys did incredibly well to finish in the top six last season – it was a tremendous effort.

"However, we've got to build on that and keeping our best players is the only way to improve on that."

Davidson said it was a massive boost that manager Alan Irvine had decided to stay at the helm after rejecting the chance to take charge at West Bromwich Albion.

"When I heard Albion wanted Alan it wasn't a surprise considering the job he has done here," added Davidson.

"They saw what he had achieved in 18 months and I did wonder whether he would go when he was having talks and favourite for the job."

This is all well and good coming from one of our top players, however if they want to see North End doing that well perhaps they should take a look at themselves and the wage packets they are demanding from the club.

The average support would love to be on £1000 per week, yet how much are the players on?

IF the players were to look at themselves this way then perhaps the club would be able to afford to reduce the price of tickets and then perhaps more fans would be able to afford to come in and we would be able to invest more in the players.

These players lead pampered lives, lets make no bones about this. Top of the range cars, part time hours and are paid very well to basically keep themselves in very good shape.

Lets see the desire from certain fringe players and lets see if they would turn round and say boss, I am not playing well, I should be on performance related pay, therefore I will take a pay cut.

Very true Bolwhite but it would never happen. Prime example Michael Owen he and the rest of newcastle squad got them relegated so why couldn't he take a pay per game contract there to help them back up!! NO LOYALTY AND GREED!!!!!! Oh! thats just my "opinion" we are allowed opinions on here now are we??????............... (Re Murray)

Fottballers are like everyone else who is a wage earner,If some company came along and offered half as much again or even double someones current wages most
people would hand in their notice and move to the new job. Its a fact of life and fans just have to accept it. The realy annoying thing is when a player leaves a
club and then verbally trashes the club and its fans.
Some child has his or her xmas present shirt emblazoned with a players name only for 6 months later
for that player to be taking the mickey out of kids that have worshipped him on the field of play.

referrin to post 1 - it seems to me like some pne fans are never happy, they always seem to find somethin negative to moan about, players high wages and players or managers with no loyalty is in the game unfortunatly,we need to just get on with supportin preston durin the season, thats whats important.

if we dont sign any players from here to the start of the season,it shows we have no money, and nothin can be done to bring anyone in,and straight away, preston fans will jump on the bandwagon and slate irvine and shaw for it.

just get on with supportin pne, stop findin ways to lower the tone and be realistic.

be patient with irvine on bringin new faces in.

i personally think the two possible signins were a throw off to us preston fans,to settle us down a little bit,or maybe they chose to go elsewere,i do know one thing,i will be backin my team to the full from now until the end of the season, with no negativity.

the bookies have predicted us to finish 9th this time, they still dont like backin lil old pne do they, but who cares, were underdogs yet again, and that just how i like it.

Tend to agree with you, post 5. It gets a bit bi-polar on here, sometimes criticising the board for lacking ambition, saying we are a small club, and not gambling on investing in the team... then saying we should cut the players wages! That would certainly attract all the top players.
I don't disagree with the ideas of post 1, but it's just not practical in a team that hopes to challenge

if you pay peanuts you get monkeys,we struggle enough to sign players with our capped wage structure.

not allowed an opinion mooney, you just have to agree with the masses.
