Police are to review CCTV footage of Preston North End fans at Burnley's Turf Moor ground in a bid to identify the thugs who smashed up seats following their side's 3-1 defeat.
Officers have launched an investigation into ugly scenes which marred the derby clash after a 16-year-old boy from Preston was arrested at the match on suspicion of criminal damage. He has been bailed until October 6.

But despite outrage from Burnley fans over the incident, the club is unlikely to ban Preston supporters.

A section of North End's 3,000-strong support left a trail of destruction during their side's derby day defeat on Saturday. Wooden seats in the Cricket Field stand were ripped from their hinges and left littered on the floor of the stand.

It is the second year in a row North End fans have damaged seats at Turf Moor.

A spokesman for Lancashire police said: "A 16-year-old from Preston was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and bailed pending further investigation, including reviewing CCTV footage."

A Burnley FC spokesman said they were still not commenting on the incident.

But the Lancashire Evening Post understands the club has no plans to ban PNE fans or reduce their ticket allocation for future matches.

Stefan Haluk, of the Burnley Football Supporters Club, said: "It is only a minority but it happened last year. As far as I'm concerned if I was Burnley Football Club I would take a photo of it and send it to Preston with a bill.

A spokesman for the Football League said they would only get involved if Burnley FC made a complaint to them.

PNE has pledged to assist Burnley in "whatever action they want to take".

this is all very good rhetoric, but what about the Leeds United thugs, not the fans but the players, who smashed up the dressing room at Deepdale 2 years ago?

Let's face it, it was bang out of order, but let's not throw martyrs on the stake. Identify them, suspend them from away games for the season (and Burnley away in the future), and make them pay for the damage (probably about a fiver looking at those pictures).

We lose - so seats get smashed up. Real supporters? NEVER.

Mindless cretins - definitely.

£5 worth of damage or £50,000. there is no difference. £1 is £1 too much.

Can anyone tell we what it feels like after mindlessly trashing a ground?

J-pne, maybe u should name and shame a few. Because I am fed up with the minority doing stuff in our Clubs name. They should be Banned from away games and banned from Local Derbies. They not just damaging Burnley FC, but they damaging PNE. And when fans say they going to boycott games coz it going to cost £28, well name and shame these idiots and then the cost of football can be brought down.

How many of these mindless prats are going to Watford.. a ruff guess, none,do they realise the damage that their doing to the name of Preston North End FC.Then you wonder why stewards at grounds like Plymouth give the good supporters of PNEFC a rough time.

You know who they are so inform the club as to their identities. A few idiotic fans tar the good fans with the same brush.

There doesn't appear to be any comments down the Hillbilly Highway ......

This appears to be just an LEP story, despite the two papers being linked. Why is that ?

Man of R. Were the photos just manipulated then? Were they simply a figment of our imagination? Were no seats trashed?
Your log-on name doesn`t fit your postings at times.
Can there EVER be any reasonable excuse for trashing a ground? I think not, but I am always open to SENSIBLE comment.

LL - as I have said previously, they're "Bang out of Order", based on the "broken seats", but I am really concerned that this is being pushed to provocation levels - it's not reported in Burnley, so why does the LEP highlight it ? Yes, of course they should be punished, if proved, but there only appears to be Preston folk interested in a hanging. Let any punishment fit the crime. I bet some of the holier than though comments are from people who have been reckless in their youth. Before you ask, not me, but I'm not a do-gooder that wants to forgive and forget but I guess what wrangles me is the incident from Leeds United who literally got away with trashing the changing rooms at Deepdale, yet that incident wasn't fans, but clearly professional (?) footballers. Why the hell should they get away with it? Now, when we don't really have any facts (ok, they're trying to get some) on the "Noth End" fans who damaged what looks to be about a doxen rickety old seats.

All I am saying is put things into perspective, or is everyone but me, advocating a public hanging?

I'm always cautious how things are reported. Ten years ago, I was in Marseilles for the England -v- Tunisia group opener. The day before, on the Sunday, my friend and a lad from Cambridge were sat having a quiet drink, when a reporter tried to befriend us and asked if we knew of any trouble being planned. We sent him on his way. To this day, I never by a newspaper and use the internet and TV for my news, although I do not put the LEP in the same category as a tabloid, and when I am in Preston, it is the only paper I will buy (specifically for PNE).

oh, and even if PNE fans do get charged, I like to think we do still have "innocent until proved guilty", rather than guilty by voting.
