All-action No.9 Chris Brown is fighting to be fit for Preston North End's Championship opener against Ipswich Town on Saturday.
Brown has not featured since suffering an ankle injury in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Everton at Deepdale last month.

But manager Alan Irvine indicated that Brown could be ready for the marathon trip to Suffolk, where he looks set to spearhead North End's attack at Portman Road.

Irvine said: "I'd be very disappointed if Chris is not in contention for Ipswich.

"He has made good progress in the last 48 hours and was close to making the squad at Crewe last weekend.

"However, I thought it wise not to risk him because there is no point in taking chances at this stage.

"He hurt his ankle in the Everton friendly and since then he's had a little bit of pain in a hamstring and in his hip.

"It is nothing major, though, and hopefully he'll be okay."

Brown, a £400,000 capture last term, admits he can't wait to team up with ex-Sunderland team-mate Ross Wallace.

The pair were together at the Stadium of Light for a short spell and Brown was hugely impressed with Wallace, who has signed a season-long loan deal and made his Lilywhites debut in the 2-0 win at Crewe.

Brown said: "He's brilliant at getting at defenders and whipping the ball in, and he will be an excellent signing.

"He's the sort of player who excites the fans and I'm sure our supporters will love his style of play."

Irvine admits he is exploring all options in the transfer market as he bids to strengthen his squad further.

I think this highlights the problem we have upfront.

As it stands it looks like we will primarily be relying on Brown and Mellor to form a successful scoring partnership and without one or other of them the fall back position looks no better than last season.

In my view the difference between a reasonably successful campaign with a top half finish and a possible tilt at the play-offs or one which might see us struggle lies in the issue of whether a convincing new striker can be brought in.

fully agree on the level, but to be honest i think we need another out and out striker and not a target man, we will finish top six this year if we bring in a natural finisher, but i'm sure Al has this in hand, in AL we trust, up the lilywhites,
P.S lashers definate bottom 3 where they truly belong!!

Good post - on the level

However good our first choice forwards are, we have no Plan B when it comes to injuries, suspensions, tactical changes up front.

Hawleys an out and out striker! But he's going back to carlise. So lloks like we might be signing a new striker. But the fans are left in the DARK like normal.

Hawley's Out and Out striker At work? just remind me how many goals he scored last term? If Hawleys an out and out striker then u may as well give matty hill a go up front coz he'd probably score more, Do you and i watch the same team? There are numerous post on here not by myself about how poor a finisher Hawley is can they all be wrong to At Work or is it that your word is gospel?

Some good points. Along with others my concern is the lack of strength in depth.

A good start to the campaign is essential or we will be playing catch-up by November. Look at Moysie's comments regarding Everton's lack of transfer activity. He makes the point that even bringing players in now - at this late stage - will hinder all concerned as they won't have a decent pre-season under their belts with the new club. Alan Irvine is right that we mustn't sign players who don't better the squad, but I can only assume that a good few targets have slipped from our grasp for a plethora of reasons.

Still, let's get up and at 'em on Saturday... c'mon the whites.

Hawley is an out and out striker, hes always in the right place, and making the right runs, just lacks pace a strenth AND most of all service from probly deeeee worst midfield in the league. And how we've got away with the midfield we've had for so long i dont know.

Elly, you think browns bad!!!!!!! shows how much you know.

Hawley is an out and out striker - lets face it he can't play anywhere else. His problem is that he is a League 2 striker not CCC.

I'm not as concerned as other posts however. I'm quite sure that ALan Irvine is aware of what is needed and I trust our current managers judgement 100%.

Once again At work please tell me that 4 goals in 16 starts is enough? that was browns return for the last campaign!!! it would be if we are scoring goals from all over the park, but are we? as i have said many many many times before I'm not a fan of target men, that's my opinion and I'm entitled to that, so yet again is your word spoken from god so must we all comply with you truly great knowledge from what is obviously a level far greater than i could ever wish to achieve!!

also At work your comment doesn't make sence, how can he always be in the right place at the right time if he lacks PACE? surely that would mean that he wouldn't get there in time?
