Andrew Lonergan hailed Steven Gerrard as "the best player in the world" after keeping the England star off the scoresheet at Deepdale.
The Preston keeper saved everything the Liverpool skipper threw at him and then revealed: "It was a privilege to be on the same field."

Lonergan kept out half a dozen efforts from Gerrard – one an acrobatic fingertip stop which earned a respectful nod from the England star himself.

He also frustrated a wasteful Robbie Keane on a night when North End gave the Premier League leaders a few frights of their own.

In the end class told. But Lonergan and his team-mates were able to walk away with the heads held high after pushing English football's top side all the way.

"To be honest I thought two-nil probably flattered them a little bit," said Lonergan, who needed a painkilling injection in his thigh to play.

"One-nil would have been about right – that second one was a bit harsh on us.

"I am proud of the way we stood up to a team with so many great players, especially in the second half.

"In the first half, we couldn't believe just how good they were.

"We had seen them against Newcastle last weekend and they were awesome
that day.

"But face-to-face, the quality they have got is even more frightening.

"We managed to keep them to just the one goal by half-time and the gaffer said to keep our shape and we would do all right. And we did."

Preston pushed Liverpool back in the second half and even had the ball in the net after 64 minutes.

But referee Martin Atkinson chalked off Sean St Ledger's header because Jon Parkin was wrestling on the ground with Jamie Carragher in the
goalmouth.

Throwing bodies forward late on in a bid to snatch a replay at Anfield cost North End a second goal, with Gerrard racing clear to gift Fernando Torres a simple tap in.

But Irvine's team were still given an appreciative ovation at the end as they claimed some big name shirts as souvenirs – Paul McKenna getting Gerrard's and Sean St Ledger bagging Torres'.

Lonergan said: "I can't speak highly enough about Liverpool, they are unbelievable.

"I feel privileged to play on the same pitch as Stevie Gerrard and Robbie Keane.

"I know Keane missed some chances. But their movement is just outstanding.

"That is the thing we can learn from. We can also learn a lot from how good, how fit, how fast and how strong you have got to be to play in the Premier League.

"In the first half I was thinking, 'I don't know if I'm cut out for this Premier League business'.

"But we were better second half and we gave a decent account of ourselves.

"I only made one or two saves really, but I thought they were good saves.

"I'm glad I did because I wouldn't have liked to be beaten by four or five – that wouldn't have been nice.

"The save from the Gerrard shot which was going into the top corner was a good one. I was happy with that one, especially being against a player who in my mind is the best in the world.

"I'm not totally over the moon because we got beaten. But at the end of the day it could have been worse, much worse.

"That second goal was when we were pushing everyone forward and we were down to just one defender – and it was probably a foul on him anyway."

Liverpool rolled out their big guns to face Preston after coming unstuck in the FA Cup with a weakened team against Barnsley last season.

Rafa Benitez granted skipper Gerrard's wish and put him in the starting line-up despite the traumatic week he had gone through off the field.

PNE fans taunted the 28-year-old, although the chants were never going to have a significant effect on a player assistant manager Sammy Lee described later as 'a terrific professional'.

Interesting comments by Lonnergan who had a superb game, stood up well and came and collected confidently when required.

Watching at home (therefore to some not a 'true' fan') one player stood out a mile for North End and that was Billy Jones - his comfort on the ball, willingness to attack and defensive awareness were premiership quality and I just hope we can keep hold of him long term.

I have read some of the posts from the match analysis/reports and the difference in opinions seem amazingly wide and some people shooting off on some unbelievable tangents from the main subject (why have a pop at the Board following a cup defeat?)

We gave a good account of ourselves but were beaten by the better team and particularly completely outplayed in the first half. We were unable to adjust to playing against a lone striker, conceded ground in Midfield and were quickly swamped when we had the ball forcing us to gave it away cheaply - making Chaplow in particular look a more average player than he clearly is. Normally he is our one player who looks to take the ball under control an play on every occasion, rather than move it on immediately.

Second half was completely different and there are probably quite a few reasons why - well done Alan and team for what must have been said half time and the reaction that followed.

Interesting that one of our best players this season was having self doubts when he saw close up how good Liverpool are...I also know from SSL's family how nervous SSL was before the game and yet we fans expect our playres to go out and dominate the best team in the league THIS SEASON..

We managed to do that against the Cup winners in our last FA CUP tie but clearly Pool are 2 steps up from Pompey. Alonso was untackleable and Gerrard unmarkable - great to watch.

Said it B4 but I was proud to be a PNE fan on Saturday night...and with 1 good penalty decision from the 3 possibles we could be looking at a replay...

Dont want to change to point but just wanted to pick up on various comments on other threads about the KOP for Pool and for Burnley ??(is that official?).

Since January WE have been the 5th best team in the league and yet our highest gate LAST SEASON was 16149 v Burnley including AWAY fans. This season the best has been 17587 V Wolves incl. away fans...

On Boxing Day, traditionally the highest home attendance of the season we had 13896 - THE SECOND LOWEST IN THE DIVISION (ok Blackpool were away!!).

When we look at these figures we can get ALL PNE fans into 2 stands never mind 4 (even when we are playing well) for most games and so how can we criticise the board / management for trying to maximise income by selling extra seats to away fans...at least its money for PNE and more than we'd get from stay away PNE fans.

The only exception for me would be Blackpool as I would gove them the same number of seats we get - at the same price -

This is incorrect

There is a big debate going on about how Lonners should have done better with teh goal.

Discuss.

I have to agree with Lonergan - Gerrard has to be one of the world's best. His movement, passing and shooting were all immense. He was contantly in 4/5 yards of space everytime he recieved the ball. The 'goal' for Preston was a stupidly blatent and unneccessary foul by 'the beast'. Anyone else noticed that he can't jump? - Tony Lormor was the same!

Rev, the gate for the Derby game was 15,197 PNE made an error on what was announced and there was an article on the official website confirming this.

However I agree with you that looking at our results throughout 2008 the team deserve more support in numbers than they are getting.

Post 6, Tom, what planet are you on? The pace of the shot coming from close in and through a crowded box gave Lonners no chance. If you want to aportion blame, when their isn't any, blame the beast. If he had not turned away from the shot and had stayed straight on the shot would have hit him. I suggest you watch the replay again.

I've got to admit watching the match again on video that Mellor was a big let down. I don't know whether or not he froze on the day or they just new how to play him. The big plus has got to be Parkin and Wallace who gave Carragher the run around in the second half. Lets hope we can carry on like this at Wolves. The midfield was shown up again big time. Not strong enough and not big enough. Mckenna needs to stop these stupid over the shoulder passes he does. He gives possession away 8 times out of 10. At Barnsley he was terrible. I do wonder if Irvine could get hold of a big holding midfielder if Mckenna would be warming the bench for the rest of the season. It wouldn't do him any harm.
