The wooden crucifix was carried from St George's Church in Lune Street to a Good Friday service on the Flag Market.
Young and old braved high winds to take part in the service led by Vicar of Preston Fr Timothy Lipscomb.
He told the crowds: "We come together to witness the fact that Christ was put to death by mankind and to celebrate the rising of Christ on Easter Sunday.
"That death is a gift to us and gives hope of new life."
He added: "It has been an excellent turn out and gives people the opportiunity to be part of the story of Christ.
"They can all join in together in safety and hope for the future."
Despite the weather, many in the crowd waved their arms in the air to give priase to God as they joined in hymns and listened to readings.
David Wade, from St George's Church, Ashton: "I helped carry the cross. It's very, very heavy and makes you wonder how our Lord managed it.
"People have not sneered at us, they seem to have been very impressed by it all and feel it is very important."
