Preston has given a favourable reaction to Barack Obama's election as the new president of the United States.
As Obama celebrates his historic victory as the US's first black president, the Lancashire Evening Post ventured into Preston city centre to find out what the public think of the new top man at the White House.

And the reaction from those questioned was a positive one.

One described it as a "a milestone of worldwide significance" and "a step in the right direction".

Craig Proctor, of Cottam, said: "He's the guy that can bring people together."

And another made this plea to Obama: "Do what you promised sir, we're counting on you!"

Who cares about the USA Elections, we want our own and its not like them over there are going to listen to any messages on this site. In fact if you watched Question Time last week, they were saying they want to make sure they do go the same way the UK is going. Thats because they can see us becoming a nanny state.

No,no,no David. the last thing the USA wants to do is go the way the UK has gone, from THE world power to a shadow of its former self.

They've never heard of Preston. As 1992 Guild approached we visited Preston in Washington State. It's a crossroads with a filling station and not much more. They were under-whelmed by the Guild and that was that. There are unpteen Prestons in the US of A. The one we visited was named after a man called Preston, not Preston, Lancashire, who started the woodyard there.

David as for your comments who cares about the USA and elections there well let me tell you that the mess that Bush got the world into and what the Uk did by following it has been nothing short of a DISASTER!!

I think Obama has a lot of hard work to do especially after the mess Bush has left the world in. I think he will lead the country into a new era and I hope he suceeds.

For me Bush should be tried for War crimes against Humanity.

The election of an Afro-American as the most powerful man on the planet is a huge step forward. Lets hope he practices what he preaches. The Bush mk2 era has been a complete failure for them and the world. Will he invade Pakistan and wipe out Bin Laden and his followers, like he has stated? Well that could end up with that region more inflamed than it is now. Lets see where he starts to heal the world like he says is going to,he will need to be better than most of the Presidents since Regan and talk to their enemies, and try and end the wars in the world.

Post 4- No doubting Bush was not a great President, but war crimes against humanity? Hope you are wearing your poppy this week Blackred, because those brave men and women lay down their lives so you have the freedom to spout such rubbish...Iraq is a better place now- FACT!

did any know that Preston North End once scored 26 goals in a single match?
That is like an NFL american footbal match result!(which is more like rugby not football-or soccer as our american brethren like to call it!)

Paulpne - what you chatting about, Iraq is a better place now- FACT! - Theres nothing left of it, sad enough but the person who brought the statue of saddam down even regrets it, WHY - he said because we were much better off under saddams rule. Doesnt that tell you something. WAKE UP - NO MORE WARS

Obama will be a good President. He is not a hot head, like cowboy Bush and more educated, smart and level headed. 90% of americans consider bush a disaster.
