Crowds filled Lancaster Road as Army, Navy and Royal Air Force veterans together with serving troops from the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and from the 5 General Medical Support Unit marched through the streets for a special service on the Flag Market.

This year's service took on extra significance as it marks 90 years since the end of the First World War in 1918.

Arthur Grisedale, secretary of the Preston and District branch of the Ex-Services' Council, said: "I think the conflicts in Aghanistan and Iraq also keep it in people's minds.

"I believe it is our duty to come here and remember all of those who served for our country."

The crowds heard readings from the Vicar of Preston Timothy Lipscomb, Fr Joseph Duggan representing the Catholic churches and Rev Gillian Houghton, representing Methodist and Free Churches from the cenotaph on the Flag Market.

The crowds which lined Birley Street and Cheapside around the square then fell silent at 11am as a lone bugler played The Last Post.
