A broken down freight train at Preston station has led to congestion with services from across the country being held up.
The vehicle broke down shortly after 7am on Tuesday on the fast line at the city's terminal leading to four platforms being shut and half-hour delays for early morning commuters.
A spokesman for station operator's Virgin Trains said that only platforms one and two were open at 8am.
The disruption also affected services on Transpennine Express between Barrow and Bolton and Northern Rail and Blackpool North and Blackburn.
The Virgin spokesman said: "Services are running but things are very congested because there is obviously only two platforms open for arrivals and departures from Preston.
"There are not extreme delays and the owners of the freight train are working to get it moved as soon as possible.
"We are doing everything we can to ensure that services are not cancelled."
He added that the 7.29am departure to Birmingham New Street was the only service which was cancelled this morning and there were "no immediate plans" to cancel any other services.
A spokesman for British Transport Police at Preston station said the breakdown had not caused any problems with disorder.
