At around 2pm, members of Morecambe’s RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew were on a routine training exercise in the hovercraft when HM Coastguard requested them to proceed to the Red Bank Farm area to assist the local Coastguard team to extract a young man who had become trapped in mud.

The casualty was finally freed at approximately 4pm the same day (Saturday, March 12) and, because of the length of time that he had been trapped, he was transferred by hovercraft to a waiting Caernarfon based Coastguard helicopter. He and his mother were then flown to hospital.

Morecambe RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, Kevin Jackson, said "We were already out on exercise when tasked and so able to respond quickly to the incident; which illustrates how the various agencies combine together effectively to achieve positive outcomes."
