Woman, 88, assaulted in sex attack

An 88-year-old woman has been sexually assaulted in her Lancashire home.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the woman was attacked at around 12.30am on Tuesday.

Detectives said the woman contacted her son to say that a man had entered her flat at Wellington Court, Accrington. She claimed the intruder had then raped her.

The woman resisted and the man physically assaulted her before leaving. She has been left with slight bruising and a bloodied nose.

Specially-trained officers have been speaking with the victim to obtain all the details of the attack.

Det Chief Insp Neil Hunter, who is leading the investigation for Lancashire police, said: "This is an incredibly nasty attack on a defenceless lady.

"Throughout the day we have had specially-trained officers working with the victim in a sensitive manner to piece together the sequence of events that occurred during this offence.

"It is important that we catch the person responsible for this wicked offence and I would appeal for anyone who may have seen anybody acting suspiciously in the Wellington Court area between 11.30pm and 12.30am to contact police."

Anybody with any information should contact police on 01254 51212 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
