Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was left with 'serious' head injuries following an accident on the A59.

The accident happened at shortly after 9pm last night.

A silver VW Polo, travelling in lane one of the two lane stretch from Sawley towards Clitheroe, lost control after the Sawley Road junction.

The car rolled several times before coming to rest in a lay-by, police said.

The driver, a 24-year-old woman, was taken by ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital with serious head injuries. Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Her family are being supported by specially trained officers.

Sgt Tracey Ward, of the Lancashire Police road policing unit, said: "This incident has left a young woman with serious injuries and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision to get in touch."
