Windmill book gets published online

The last living grandchild of a Lancashire author is fulfilling a dream by republishing one of his most popular books online.

Shirley Matthews, granddaughter of the late Allen Clarke, plans to publish her grandfather's book on Lancashire windmills on the web in his memory.

Charles Allen Clarke, who went by the name of Allen, was born in 1863 and died in 1935.

He wrote 29 books, some of them under the pen name Teddy Ashton.

He was also famous for his stories and poems written in the Lancashire dialect.

Shirley, who is 60 and a writer from Blackpool, says the original book, which was written on the back of advertisements and bound with string, was given to Blackpool Central Library by Allen's oldest living son Frank.

But the Clarke family's ultimate ambition is to move the book to the Little Marton Windmill in Blackpool, which was finally turned into a museum in September after lying empty for 40 years.

Shirley hopes that, through publishing The Land of Windmills online, her grandfather's stories will captivate more people.

Shirley wrote on her website www.wind millland.com: "I, as his granddaughter, felt when I turned the first page of his original book, by means of the computer, a rush of pride that my grandfather's work was once again to be read by all, even the near sighted, and felt like he truly now has his voice back."
