What's your story of Preston?

A revamped exhibition to celebrate Proud Preston is in the pipeline... and museum bosses need your help.

The Harris Museum and Art Gallery wants to update the popular Story of Preston gallery in time for Guild celebrations in 2012.

The display, on the first floor of the Grade I listed neo-classical

building, contains part of the museum's history collection and

items from the decorative and fine art collections about Preston.

Emma Heslewood, keeper of history, said: "Preston is an ancient

borough with a rich history, but it has also made history.

"For example, it was the first town outside London to be gas lit in 1816, it was the birthplace of teetotalismand was involved in the formation of the Football League.

"Other examples may be the Preston Guild, radical politics, sporting stories like football or cricket or the Preston Carnival.

"We are interested in hearing about what readers think and if there are any people, events or stories that aren't necessarily widely known at the moment, but contribute to Preston's unique identity."

The gallery will make use of new technology and will display never-seen-before items, alongside old favourites to bring the museum's objects to life through the stories of real people.

Alex Walker, head of arts and heritage, said: "For the Guild year we will have an exciting new history gallery which local people will feel proud of and which will also be one of the prime attractions for visitors."

The plans are being funded by 100,000 fromtheHeritage Lottery Fund, 15,000 from English Heritage, 44,000 from Renaissance in the Regions and 6,000 from the Friends of the Harris Museum and Art Gallery.
