Website to tackle under-age shoppers

A new website is being launched to allow shopkeepers to check people’s age.

The website launched by Lancashire County Council next we will allow them to check a customer’s age and provide information to help them not sell to people under-age.

It is being targeted at shops selling products including alcohol, tobacco, knives and fireworks.

County Coun Albert Atkinson, the cabinet member for trading standards, said: “In the past, we gave retailers a computer disc and a DVD to explain the law on who they can sell controlled products to.”

“But after talking to retailers, we have launched a password-controlled, interactive website where they will be able to keep up-to-date with the law as well as download useful documents.”

Once up and running, 8,000 retailers across Lancashire will receive a password allowing them to access the website, www.agecheck.co.uk.

The website will be launched at an event at James Hall and Co in Fulwood, Preston, on Monday, to coincide with Alcohol Awareness Week.
