Water bosses say they are geared up to tackle burst pipes as temperatures rise.

United Utilities has launched a Leakline for people to report an increasing numbers of leaks and burst pipes expected to hit water pipework.

When the ground thaws after a prolonged period of cold weather, it can move, putting stress on the network of underground pipes. This can cause the pipes to leak or burst.

United Utilities’ regional water network manager Stuart Atkinson said: “It is not unusual to see the number of leaks and bursts increase when the temperature shifts after a prolonged cold snap.

“Our operations centre is fully geared up, and we have specialist engineers and leak detection teams working all around the region.

“Since the extreme winters of recent years we’ve also invested in additional 4X4 vehicles to make sure our engineers can get to more remote areas.”

The free Leakline number is 0800 33 00 33.
