War veteran leapt 14,000ft from plane

A one-legged war veteran leapt 14,000ft from a plane to boost funds for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation at Royal Preston Hospital.

Colin Glew, 80, trained as an 18-year-old recruit to the Royal Engineers during World War II for a parachute jump but was shot and had his leg amputated before he could complete a leap.

He finally fulfilled his life-long ambition at Cark Airfield near Grange.

Colin took part in the venture to show his appreciation for the Rosemere Cancer Centre where he received treatment for skin cancer. He raised around 900 following the sky dive and the money will pay for five new wheelchairs.

Colin, who lives in Goadsbarrow, Cumbria, said: "Every time we went, we couldn't find a wheelchair, and the nurses and the porters would all search for one for us. The staff were all lovely, all knew me and had a laugh with me.

"The parachute jump was fantastic. I did three months hard training 61 years ago, and it niggled me all my life that I never did a jump. Now I've finally fulfilled a lifelong ambition. Although when I was sat on the edge of the plane I did think, 'What am I doing here?'"
