War trenches being recreated in classroom
Living history took on a new meaning for primary school youngsters from Lancashire.
Staff and pupils at Barnacre Road school, in Longridge, took a step back in time when they decided to celebrate Armistice Day in style.
With help from their teachers, the school's 190 four to 11 year olds have recreated a World War One bunker, complete with trenches, in the library and dedicated one wall to the town's fallen heroes.
On top of that they have built an 18ft cenotaph in the hall and each child made a poppy to decorate seven wreaths.
The wreaths were laid at a special assembly on Wednesday, during which Year 6 pupils read out a 79-name roll of honour of locals who lost their lives in the First World War. This followed a presentation in which children spoke of war, from 1918 right up to the conflict in Afghanistan.
Headteacher Simon Wallis said pupils had been enthralled by the project.
He added: "The theme behind it was the relationship between Harry Patch, the last Tommy from World War One who died at the age of 111 this year, and the war in Afghanistan."
Mr Wallis added:"The children have all been involved and the Year 6 pupils helped me with the display in the library.
"The display was on show last night for our open night and along with the cenotaph it will remain until the end of the week and anyone interested is invited along."
The headteacher said the project had proved a poignant learning experience.
He said: "It has had a real impact and that's what good education is all about."
