Vandals have struck on Garstang’s Millennium Green – trying to set fire to the six picnic benches in the park.
Volunteers involved with the Millennium Green project say there is also evidence of alcohol being consumed near the picnic benches and litter left lying around – including broken glass.
The green had six new picnic benches installed last year and these have been targeted twice in the last week.
This includes somebody attempting to light a fire on top of one of the wooden tables.
Volunteer Peter Ryder said: “Since last Tuesday there have been two attempts to burn the tables down. The last attempt was yesterday when somebody attempted to light a fire on top of one of the tables.
“There is also evidence of alcohol being consumed with a lot of litter being left around including glass which is obviously very dangerous to other users.
“We have no problem with people enjoying themselves and encourage sensible use of the facilities in the picnic area but just cannot understand the mindless vandalism.
“The Green is owned and run by a small charity reliant on donations and is maintained entirely by volunteers providing a valuable asset for the people of Garstang.
“It is very disheartening when this sort of thing happens especially as the tables are valued at about £750 each which if they are destroyed is money that we do have to replace them.”
