Van driver found guilty over double death crash

A man has been convicted of causing the death of two women in a horror crash on the M6 in Lancashire.

Friends Victoria Pickering, 27, and Zoe West, 34, from Gosport in Hampshire, both died when their Ford Escort collided with a Vauxhall Astra, a HGV and a Mercedes van near Bilsborrow, Preston, in July 2008.

Miss Pickering, a passenger in the Escort, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Miss West, who was driving, suffered severe brain injuries and died the next day in Royal Preston Hospital.

Van driver Nigel Kirkham, 45, of Chesnut Avenue, Midway, Swadlincote, Derbyshire, was found guilty of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

The crash happened on the northbound carriageway at 1.15pm on Friday July 4 last year and caused massive tailbacks with the motorway shut for more than six hours.

Kirkham will appear at at Preston Crown Court for sentence on July 31.
