Eight people are in hospital after a fire at HMP Preston.

The emergency services were called to the prison on Ribbleton Lane in Preston at about 1.20pm today.

Watch manager Mark Noblet, of Bamber Bridge fire station, said a fire had started in one of the cells, but was put out by staff by the time crews had arrived.

He said two inmates were “overcome” by smoke and were given oxygen, and members of staff were also suffering from smoke inhalation.

He said the fire was under investigation and said: “It was quite a severe fire in the cell and the two inmates had to be pulled out of the cell.”

Staff used firefighting equipment to put out the blaze.

Two people suffering from smoke inhalation were taken to Royal Preston Hospital by ambulance. One of them also had an eye injury.

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said six other people had made their own way to the hospital. They were all suffering from smoke inhalation, while one person also had minor head and hand injuries.
