A man has been charged after police officers were threatened with a firearm in Preston on Tuesday.

Ashley Gerrard, 29, of Bruce Street, St Helen’s, is charged with possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of unlawful violence and possession of an imitation firearm with intent to resist lawful arrest.

Police launched an investigation after five officers were threatened by a man holding what appeared to be a handgun on Ribbleton Avenue.

Officers had stopped a car after earlier reports of a domestic incident at an address in Coppull during which a firearm was pointed at a woman.

No weapon was discharged during either incident and no-one was injured.

Gerrard is due to appear at Preston Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.
