Undies snatched from line

Crime news

Ladies underwear is being snatched from washing lines in Lancaster under the cover of darkness.

Since the end of May, ladies’ knickers have been disappearing from yards and back gardens in the Primrose and Bowerham areas of the city.

Lancaster police are now advising people not to hang underwear out to dry.

PC Gill Syer said that there had been several reports of theft of women’s underwear in particular, and that the crime spree may even be under reported.

Officers from the local Neighbourhood Team have conducted house-to-house inquiries in the area and are encouraging anyone who has any information about these offences to come forward.

PC Syer said the thefts had not been continuous, but had started at the end of May, with a recent surge of activity, always at night.

She said: “This may seem like a joke to some people but can be very worrying for those involved.

“I would urge people, despite the good weather, to keep their washing lines free from underwear so there is little opportunity for the perpetrator to continue this crime.

“If anyone has information in relation to these offences then please contact the Police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800555111.”
