Tearful tributes have flooded in for a talented university student, described by friends as a “beautiful soul,” who died in a suspected hit-and-run collision near Preston.

Police have formally identified the 20-year-old as Milda Okunyte from Lithuania, a first year student at the University of Central Lancashire.

My beautiful soul sister. So wise and talented. Was a privilege to know you, even for such a short time.

She was found badly injured in the roadway at Clifton on Tuesday night and died in hospital soon after.

Stunned friends both in England and Lithuania have been posting poignant messages to Milda on social media since news of the tragedy first broke on Wednesday.

One, signing herself Katie Ryan, wrote: “My beautiful soul sister. So wise and talented. Was a privilege to know you, even for such a short time. You taught me so much. Our little community here in Preston will never be the same.”

Another, called Alicia McWhisky, added: “RIP Milda, you beautiful soul. Didn’t know you for too long but you were so vibrant and energetic with many talents.”

Genevra Lurene wrote: “We’re in absolute bits. Such a wonderful, bright and loving person. You’ll always have a place in our hearts and minds. Too young and too talented to be taken so soon.”

And Kieron Rush added: “She had an art that could inspire all her friends. Her boundaries, inner beauty, knew no ends. She shone the way for all to see. Wherever you are shine a new light, sit amongst the stars,”

A 26-year-old man from St Annes was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and was bailed until May.

Police are now working to trace the final movements of Milda, and are appealing for information.

Sergeant Sean Cunningham of the Road Policing Unit said: “This is a tragic incident where a young woman has sadly passed away and specialist officers are supporting her family at this difficult time.

“I’d like to thank those who have already come forward but we would still like to speak to anyone with information about the incident.

“Similarly, we are keen to piece together the final movements of Milda and how she came to be on Preston New Road.

“Did you see a young woman matching her description in the area on Tuesday? Any information you have could help us with our enquiries.”

Milda was last seen at 3pm on Tuesday in Preston town centre.

She is described as white, about 5ft 10in tall and of slim build with long dark hair to the middle of her back, and it appears to have feathers woven into it.

She was wearing black Nike trainers, jeans and a grey hooded top.
