One lane of the M55 between junction 3, Kirkham and junction 4, Blackpool will remain closed until tomorrow morning after a white van flipped over on the westbound carriageway just after midday today.

The motorway was closed in both directions for around 30 minutes whilst an air ambulance attended the scene.

The van’s tyre allegedly blew causing it to flip over down a grass verge.

The area has suffered major traffic problems since the accident but the eastbound carriageway re-opened at 1.20pm and two lanes on the westbound carriageway re-opened at around 2.30pm.

The Highways Agency announced just before 5pm that one of the lanes will stay closed until tomorrow morning.

A spokesman said: “Lane one is going to remain closed on the M55 westbound between junction three and four for overnight resurfacing.

“This is currently causing minimal delays.”

And Lancashire Police revealed what had happened to cause the closure.

A police spokesman said: “Just after midday a white van has flipped over on the M55 and it has gone down a grass verge.

“There is a possibility a blown tyre has caused the accident.”
