Ahead of the Easter bank holiday weekend, the RAC named the M55 as one of the 10 traffic hotspots.

The M55 is expected to strain under the weight of the extra traffic as thousands of holidaymakers descend on Blackpool for the Easter break.

On the back of an already busy week, more staff have been taken on at resort attractions, while hoteliers are also preparing for a boost in numbers.

The RAC said 12.8m trips will be made across the four-day break as families make the most of the long weekend. The M55 joined the M25, M5 and M4 as the roads predicted to be busiest over the weekend – particularly on Easter Sunday.

RAC Traffic Watch spokesman Rod Dennis said: “The Easter getaway is the first big holiday break of the year for many people and 2017 promises to be no exception. While many schools have already broken up, we’re expecting millions of families to make the most of the long weekend and jump in the car for a trip.”
