One lane of the M6 motorway northbound was closed for 50 minutes at rush hour this morning after a loose tyre caused a car to crash.
The lane was closed from 8.10am onwards after a car careered into the central reservation, causing mass tailbacks for thousands of commuters.
The Highways Agency shut off the outside lane of the M6 northbound just before junction 31, A59 Samlesbury, Preston.
The passengers were taken to Royal Preston Hospital and two other cars were stranded in the outside lane but were not involved in the crash.
The accident caused queueing traffic between junction 30, M61 and junction 31, M6. And the incident caused further traffic congestion on the M61 to junction 9, M65, Clayton Brook and to junction 28, B5256 Leyland.
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: “No other vehicle was involved, the car hit the barrier after losing a wheel and the passengers travelling in the vehicle were taken to hospital”
