Tragic Matthew a 'committed and enthusiastic' young man

Staff at a Lancashire school have paid tribute to a former student who died after plunging onto a Lancashire motorway.

Matthew Miller, 17, fell from a bridge on to the M6 at Leyland, where he was hit by a car.

The emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway close to junction 28, Leyland, at 10.30pm on Saturday, January 2, and he was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital, where he died two days later.

Matthew was a keen cricket player who was in the second year of a BTEC IT course at Runshaw College.

He had previously attended Balshaw's CE High School, in Leyland, where headteacher Jo Venn spoke of her shock. She said: "Matthew was an excellent student during his time at Balshaw's.

"He was a reserved young man but mature in his approach to school life. He was a committed and enthusiastic prefect with a very positive attitude to work.

"During his time at Balshaw's he showed a particular keenness on cricket and his GCSE ICT cricket project is still used today as an example of excellence to our Year 11.

"Matthew played cricket for his house and for the school.

"He was very keen on ICT, Resistant Materials and English.

"Matthew gained certificates for 100% attendance during several years and was vice-captain for Cuerden House during Year 11.

"We were all so very shocked and saddened to hear of Matthew's death and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family."
