Passengers will be without a rail service this summer as part of electrification upgrades to the railway line.
Today, Network Rail closed the line between Chorley and Leyland via the Chorley tunnel.
The closure is part of Network Rail’s £1 billion investment to provide a faster, more reliable rail service. A replacement bus service is being provided by Northern Rail and First TransPennine Express.
Work is scheduled to be completed on August 31.
Whilst the track is closed it means the First TransPennine Express services between Manchester and Blackpool North, Barrow-in-Furness and Windermere will be diverted and will not stop at Chorley and Buckshaw Parkway.
Northern Rail will offer replacement bus services between Chorley and Preston midweek and at the weekend the buses will run between Bolton and Preston.
The changes to train services will add to the impact on Chorley from the electrification work.
The bridge on Harpers Lane, in Chorley, and a bridge on Railway Road, Adlington, have been closed due to the works.
Both bridges are being repaired and modified in preparation for reconstruction in 2015.
Ian Joslin, area director for Network Rail, said: “Significant engineering is required to lower the track and install the electrification equipment inside the tunnel and there is no other option but to close the line while this is carried out. The closure has been carefully planned so that it is kept to a minimum and we are working closely with the train operators regarding amended services and disruption.
“ I apologise for any inconvenience caused and advise passengers to plan their journeys and check with National Rail Enquiries before travelling.”
Rob Warnes, performance and planning director for Northern Rail, said: “Once the electrification work is complete, customers will benefit from longer, faster, quieter trains.”
