A North-West rural business expert has welcomed the move to allow agricultural vehicles to use red diesel when gritting roads.

Catherine Desmond, who works with businesses across the North West of England as partner in the landed estates and rural business group of Saffery Champness, said the announcement from HMRC is “plain common sense.”

Previously such rural vehicles were only allowed to use red diesel for off-road activities and only purpose-built gritters were allowed to use red diesel when gritting on public roads during the winter season.

She added: “It really hasn’t been practical for farmers to re-fuel their tractors with normal diesel when undertaking gritting activities.”
