A protest will call on the Government to act over the “fiasco” rumbling on over the West Coast Main Line rail link.
The Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) union will protest outside a transport conference in Manchester where Norman Baker, the parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, is the keynote speaker on Thursday.
It follows calls from the union to nationalise the route which runs through Lancashire with rival operators FirstGroup and Virgin locked in a legal battle to win the right to run the service from December.
Bob Crow, the firebrand general secretary of the RMT, said the ATOC Interchange and Integrated Transport Conference which Mr Baker is speaking at was organised by operators to “milk fatter profits.”
He said: “We will be there to ram home the point that the vast majority of the British people want the whole money-making racket of privatisation swept away.”
Virgin employs 451 people at Preston station, who will transfer to First.
