The northbound M61 has now re-opened following this morning’s serious accident just ahead of the exit slip road at junction eight at Chorley
The carriageway was closed at around 7.30am following a serious collision and due to the location, drivers were diverted from junction six of the motorway at Westhoughton onto the A6.
Highways Agency traffic officers from the outstations at Samlesbury and Milnrow, Rochdale, were at the scene throughout helping to manage traffic.
Drivers stuck behind the incident were quickly released passed the scene using lane three of the carriageway.
Following an accident investigation by police the carriageway re-opened at 9.50am.
