Opening: Councillors and railway officials outside Leyland Stations new ticket office

A new ticket office has been officially opened at Leyland railway station, bringing a phase of improvement work to completion.

Funded by Northern Rail, Lancashire County Council and Network Rail’s National Stations Improvement Programme, the renewed ticket office is the result of a £400,000 investment.

Other work carried out includes the provision of five new waiting shelters, seating on platforms, installation of Customer Information Screens on all platforms and CCTV cameras.

Access for All work will also be starting at the station shortly, a major £3.5m programme improving accessibility at train stations nationwide by installing lifts and ramps.

Craig Harrop who manages the station for Northern Rail, said: “These improvements bring real benefits to our customers who travel from Leyland.

“The new waiting shelters and seating make for a more comfortable travel experience and the addition of Customer Information screens mean more up to date information is available. Add to that the peace of mind that comes with CCTV cameras, and the station is much improved.”

Ian Joslin, area director for Network Rail, said: “We continue to work with all our partners to improve the railway to meet the demands of the increasing number of passengers who choose to travel by train every day.”

County Councillor John Fillis said it was a “remarkable transformation”.

He said: “Partnership working has shown what can be achieved and I am really delighted that the DfT has included the station in the recent Access for All announcement, paving the way for the provision of state of the art lifts that will connect all the platforms to the new booking office.

“This is the icing on the cake, fully addressing the concerns expressed by mobility impaired users.”

Councillor Margaret Smith, leader of South Ribble Borough Council, said: “The need to improve Leyland Railway Station has been a priority for us for a long time, so I am really pleased that the new ticket office is now up and running.”
