Tractor convoy backs ballet dancer's TV glory bid

Fans of farmer's son turned ballet dancer Alastair Postlethwaite are revving up for his bid for primetime TV fame.

A huge convoy of tractors, festooned with banners and balloons, drove through Tarleton as the 28-year-old reached the final six of BBC1's So You Think You Can Dance.

Friends and family of the classically-trained ballet dancer used Facebook to rouse the 36-strong convoy in just hours after he sailed through the latest round on Saturday night.

Alastair, who grew up on Longlands Farm, hopes the show will launch him in musical theatre as his ballet career comes to an end.

And his home village is driving him onwards.

Family friend Sarah Bridge came up with the idea as she and a group of friends, including Alastair's brother Andrew, enjoyed a weekend in the Lake District.

She said: "I rang my Mum up on Saturday night. We had to tell her everyone's passwords to get on Facebook.

"A lot of our friends use it and it's an easy way to do it.

"She just put it out on Facebook and I went to my phone, saying, 'How many tractors can we get to turn out on Sunday?'

"One guy said, 'I can get you six!'

"It's fantastic to have so much support.

"We had a few people shaking their heads but everybody else was waving and cheering us along.

"I was beeping the horn, it was dead exciting.

All the kids were shouting and screaming.

"We had a really good afternoon."

Alastair's brother Andrew said: "It was brilliant.

"I couldn't believe that so many people turned up for it.

"It was all a bit last-minute because we didn't know if he was going to get through or not.

"But, when he did, we tried to get as many tractors as we could.

"It was amazing.

"We thought we would get four or five maybe but everyone from the local area rallied round.

"Everyone has shown so much support."
