Top chef to cook for war heroes

A Lancashire chef stayed true to his roots by cooking up a winning dish in the final of TV's toughest cookery competition.

Nigel Haworth, who runs the Michelin-starred Northcote Manor restaurant in Langho, near Whalley, prepared a tasty Lancashire hotpot using roast loin, pickled red cabbage, carrots and leeks to win the best main course award on the BBC's Great British Menu show.

He beat seven other dishes in the category and is now set to cook it for returning members of the British forces from Afghanistan at the RAF Halton base in Buckinghamshire this weekend.

The 50-year-old said: "It was tough day going down to film the final on Thursday. We started at 8.30am but did not finish until 10.30pm.

"I am absolutely delighted to get through and I feel proud to represent Lancashire and the North-West.

"It was a great achievement to win with the hotpot in the summer, so it must have been good.

"The judges wanted a taste of home and I couldn't think of anything more representative of that other than the hotpot."
