Threatened cabbie considers quitting

A Preston cabbie threatened at gunpoint during a robbery is considering quitting the job.

Mohammed Iftikhar, 50, had a gun pushed in his neck and was repeatedly punched by youths after dropping off a fare on Preston's Callon estate on Sunday.

The three attackers robbed the driver of around 180 in cash on Waldon Street before making off at around 2.45am.

Mr Iftikhar, from Frenchwood, was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital and had suffered bruising.

His daughter, Sobbeia Asad, 30, of Broadgate, Preston, told the Evening Post: "It was a big shock. I think his attackers are really sick-minded.

"He has been driving taxis for more than 20 years and this has not happened before – he is pretty shaken. He needs to have a break but is thinking of giving it up.

"Things are getting out of hand in Preston – there's a lot of raids going on and we keep seeing helicopters flying around. We hear a lot of these things happen in Manchester and London but we don't expect it to happen in Preston.

"We hear about little kids with knives, but guns – that is out of proportion."

Mr Iftikhar, a driver for Allied Taxis, was attacked after dropping off a young couple who had taken the taxi from Manchester Road to Waldon Street.

Police are continuing to attempt to trace the man and woman, who may have been witnesses to the robbery of Mr Iftikhar. Both are described as being black and aged 20 to 25.

Meanwhile, two boys from the Callon estate, aged 16 and 17, arrested on suspicion of robbery, have been released on police bail without charge.

Call the police on 0845 1 25 35 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 if you can help.
