A local gold medal winning gymnast is aiming to seal more international glory in America this summer.

Jasmine Greenwood, 11, is one of five Flic Flac gymnasts that will represent the UK at the IAIGC gymnastic world championship in Orlando, Florida.

Jasmine and the Flic Flac gymnastic academy - based near Park Hall, Charnock Richard, Chorley - have had a successful year. The youngster won five gold medals in bars, beam, floor and vault at an international competition in Malta in December and is aiming to eclipse that when she competes across the pond.

Jasmine, a Leyland St Mary’s Catholic Technology College pupil and fellow gymnasts Danielle Rimmer, 9, Megan Sumner, 14, Nicole Smith, 12 and Sarah Hole, 12 qualified after winning the UK Gymnastics National Championships held in Milton Keynes in September.

Jasmine lives in Buckshaw Village, Chorley and her mother Stacy Greenwood has urged local businesses to support the dream.

She said: “We’ve been fund raising non-stop, the girls have done everything from bake sales to bag-packing.

“I’ve written to local businesses as we need help to fund some new leotards and kit for the team.”

Jasmine will represent the UK in all four disciplines - bars, beam, floor and vault at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, Orlando from June 24 to July 6 and Stacy believes the talented youngsters can succeed overseas.

She said: “They all did really well to qualify and it is not the first time she has competed abroad.

“Her birthday is on July 4, American Independence day, she can celebrate it in the USA this year.

“It is a dream come true, she can’t wait.

“St Mary’s have been brilliant, they are allowing her time off and are supporting her.”
