Supermarket bosses have confirmed they still intend on bringing a store to Penwortham - despite a huge shake up of the business.

Tesco announced earlier this week it will close 43 stores, its headquarters and 49 stores in the pipeline are being cancelled.

But in a statement Dave Lewis, Chief Executive Officer, said: “We’ve carefully reviewed our planned new store developments across the country and it remains our intention to open our planned store in Penwortham on Cop Lane.

“We continue to believe that the store will provide a valued service to the local community. The new store will provide a great shopping experience as well as bringing new jobs and investment to the area.”

The former DWP site in Cop Lane was sold to Tesco in 2013. In 2012 plans were passed for Sainsbury’s on the site, but were later dropped.

A Tesco spokesman said he was unable to provide specific information on which other stores are closing. It is not known if any of these are in Lancashire.
