Teacher groomed pupil, court told

A teacher groomed a teenage pupil at his school online before getting her to send 'provocative' photos of herself in her underwear, a court was told.

Ian Goy, 27, a technology teacher at Heysham High School, struck up a friendship with the girl using the MSN Messenger service.

Goy claimed he had got her details from a man called Andy Collinge, who said he was a former pupil at the school and now socialised with Goy.

On the first day of the trial at Preston Crown Court, it was heard how Goy and the pupil soon began chatting online.

Goy asked the girl to send photos of herself in her underwear.

She sent the teacher three photos of herself in "provocative poses", but when Goy later asked her to pose on a webcam, she refused. When her mother checked her daughter's messages she discovered two Hotmail account addresses which she did not recognise.

One was alleged to be linked to Andy Collinge and the other was registered to Goy.

The girl's mother complained to the school and police became involved.

Goy admitted he was responsible for the Hotmail account registered to him, but said he had not used it since Easter the previous year, before the offences were alleged to have been carried out.

During their enquiries, police also spoke to another former pupil who claimed Goy had sent her two 'sexually charged' text messages which embarrassed her.

He had asked her about her taste in underwear and sexual preferences when she was "15 or so", the court heard.

Richard Haworth, prosecuting, said: "An exchange struck up between Ian Goy, a teacher at Heysham High School, and (the pupil) when in all reality and common sense it shouldn't have done."

Mr Haworth said Goy denies being the person on the other end of the girl's Internet connection, although the girl's mother told police she had seen his photo on the screen of the computer in her home.

Goy, of Lockerbie Avenue, Thornton Cleveleys, is charged with one count of causing or inciting a 15-year-old to engage in sexual activity by a person in a position of trust.

He denies the offence.
