Students interpret the magic of everyday objects
Students with designs on success are hoping a little bit of magic will go a long way to getting their skills noticed.
Sympathetic Magic is the title of an exhibition taking place in UCLan's PR1 Gallery.
The second year textile innovations students from the university's Northern School of Design, who compiled it, took inspiration from artefacts used to bring luck, good health or happiness.
Senior lecturer Fiona Candy says: "Our project asked students to think about the magical belief systems that underpin the everyday – to reveal the special powers that we believe some objects have, beyond the obvious.
"So for instance, people may throw confetti at a wedding without really thinking about why. We've tried to interpret the meaning of the tradition, where confetti is a way to manifest an ephemeral wish for luck and happiness for the newlyweds.
"It's an attempt to influence the way that life will treat them."
During the project, the students have interpreted the magic of a variety of everyday objects and belief systems, including the business suit as a 'charm' to bring its wearer success and special powers, or medicine and hygiene as 'spells' to keep lives long and healthy.
Mia Swales took her influence from confetti and the good luck, fortune and fertility that it's supposed to bring.
She says: "Confetti is used to bestow fertility for the newly wedded couple and I've found it very interesting to try and convey its textural qualities. Because I've suspended it from above, the viewer can walk through the confetti and experience it for themselves."
