Tougher rules for tanning salons

Trading standards officers have called for a minimum age limit and tougher rules for sunbeds, which have been linked to skin cancer.

Chief officer Jim Potts said: "There is very little regulation of the use, sale and hire of this equipment. Other products which have the potential to cause harm, such as all domestic products, are surrounded by strong laws to protect people. I would like to see the same for sunbeds."

Man burnt after pan fire

A man was taken to hospital with severe burns after tackling a pan which caught on fire in his flat.

He is believed to have tried to put out the flames at his first-floor flat in Fishergate Hill at 10.50pm last night and suffered burns to his hands, forearms and head.

The man, who is believed to be in his 40s, has been taken to the specialist burns unit at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester.

Crew manager Ian Lloyd, of Penwortham fire service, said they rescued him and evacuated three neighbours.

Preston holding out for comedian

Comedian Frankie Boyle, star of BBC2's Mock The Week, is coming to Preston ... but fans will have to wait 16 months to see him!

The caustic comic will be at the Guild Hall as part of his I'd Happily Punch Every One Of You In The Face tour on November 18 2010.

Tickets go on sale at the Guild Hall Box Office, priced 20, tomorrow.

Giant losses for BAE

Defence giant BAE Systems has revealed it lost 70m in the first six months of the year after a fall in demand for its armoured vehicles.

But, the group, which employs 11,500 people at Warton and Samlesbury, near Preston, said it expects "good growth" for the rest of the year on the back of increased military spending in the UK and United States.

It also revealed the a third tranche order of Lancashire-built Typhoon jets sealed last month will be worth 2 bn.

Major attractions lined up for Garstang Show

Champion football freestyler John Farnworth will be among the attractions at Garstang Show on Saturday.

Traditional agricultural and horticultural competitions will be held, plus cheese and honey shows. The showfield is in Wyre Lane, signposted from the A6. The event starts at 8am and runs until 9.30pm.

Sunbed safety

Town hall chiefs in part of Lancashire are to inspect sunbed salons in a bid to ensure they are safe.

The new Ribble Valley campaign will see environmental health bosses checking that UV tanning equipment is being operated safely.

An extra day of Sandcastle fun

Morecambe's miles of golden sands will be celebrated with the annual

sandcastle festival.

And the festival's popularity will see it extended to two days for the first time this year.

The event, on August 15 and 16, will centre around the Eric Morecambe statue and allow families to enjoy a free weekend of seaside fun while professional sand artists will create sculptures on the beach.

Teams are also invited to take part in the sandcastle competition at 11am on Sunday. Entrants need to register between 9am and 10.45am on the day for the 50 plots on a first-come, first-served basis.

And comic Ken Dodd will bring the

festival to a close with a sell-out

performance at the Platform.

Bay walkers boost funds

Walkers in Morecambe helped raise more than 3,500 for a diabetes charity.

More than 100 people took part in the nine-mile Extra Mile event across Morecambe Bay on Saturday, July 18 in aid of Diabetes UK.

Stephanie Lawless, regional fund-raising manager, said: "We were delighted to have so many walkers come along on the day.

"I'd like to convey my thanks on behalf of Diabetes UK to everyone who took part.

"The money raised will help fund vital research and improve the lives of people all across the North West."

Choir hopes for members

A choir is on the hunt for new members.

Galloway's Community Choir meets at Galloway's Society for the Blind, Howick House, Howick Park Avenue, Penwortham, every Monday at 9.30am.

Alpaca lot into the day

An alpaca farm is throwing its doors open for people to visit to view the woolly creatures.

The event will take place in August 8, between 10am and 2pm, at Sudell House Farm, Brabiner Lane in Whittingham.

Alpacas are domesticated South American hoofed animals, bred for their fleeces, and related to the llama.

Owner Angela Whittle said: "We will have a bouncy castle, teas and coffees and ice cream.

"Last year we had about 240 people. Come and see the animals, the more the merrier."

Bard in the courtyard

Excerpts from Shakespeare plays will be performed in and around the courtyard, gardens and ramparts at Hoghton Tower next month.

Big birds at St Mary's

Ostrich meat to ice cream will be on the monthly Penwortham Farmer's Market this weekend.

Enjoy jazz on grass

A jazz on the Lawn event is to be held at Hoghton Tower on Sunday, August 2.

The Red Rose Jazz Band will be performing on the Wilderness Lawn from 2pm to 4pm.

Admission is 3 per person and refreshments will be available. The house will be open for guided tours from 1pm-5pm.

Footballers to dry out...

A football team will dry people's vehicles at a car wash in return for donations.

Bamber Bridge Junior Football Club under 14s team will be at the car wash on the corner of Hennel Lane and Chorley Road, Lostock Hall on August 9 between 10am and 4pm.

Money raised will go towards paying for new kits.
