Chip pan causes blaze
Fire crews battled a blaze at a house in Frenchwood, Preston.
Firefighters used four sets of breathing apparatus after a chip pan ignited at a house on The Boulevard shortly after 5.30pm yesterday. The blaze broke out on the rear kitchen.
World record attemt
Green-fingered Lancastrians can break a world record by planting a tree.
Staff at Leyland Garden Centre in Ulnes Walton are giving away 300 free saplings for people who want to take part in the event, which will take place on December 5.
Paintball park plans thrown out
Controversial plans for a major paintball park in the Lancashire countryside have been thrown out.
Developers who planned to build the centre at Stone Check Farm, School Lane, Out Rawcliffe, near Preston, appealed to the Government after Wyre Council rejected the plans. There were objections from the public.
New exhibition at the Harris
The city's talented artists will be on display at the Harris Museum when the annual exhibition starts on Saturday. The Harris Open exhibition showcases a range of work including sculpture, textiles, drawing, painting, illustration and photography.
More than 400 entries were received for the show, which runs until December 22.
Firm in court over explosion
A firm will appear in court today in connection with an explosion at the Red Scar Industrial Estate.
Veolia Environmental Services Cleanaway Ltd is due to answer charges of failing to take safe measures to prevent a fire or explosion at Preston Crown Court.
The charges relate to the massive blaze at the site in July 2007. The prosecution is being brought by the Health and Safety Executive.
Former soldier to be sentenced for rape
A former soldier is due to be sentenced today for the rape of a mother-of-four outside a Preston nightclub 11 years ago.
Jurors at Preston Crown Court took less than 90 minutes to convict Christopher Andrew, 34, from Blair Park, Knaresborough, of rape, following a five-day trial.
The incident happened in the early hours of November 14, 1998.
Trace family with group
Penwortham Library Family History Group meets on the last Thursday of each month from 7pm to 8pm at the library in Liverpool Road.
The group is open to anyone interested in tracing their family tree with members of the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society on hand to help with queries.
Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.
Man breached order terms
A man who breached his community order has been told the order will continue.
Michael Patrick Fisher, 46, of Muncaster Road, Preston, failed to report to an officer at given times under the terms of his order, magistrates in Preston heard.
He was not in court for the hearing but was convicted in his absence.
Thug admits woman attack
A thug who assaulted a woman has been given a community order.
Mark Moss, 30, of The Crescent, Ashton, Preston, pleaded guilty to the offence before magistrates in Preston. He must attend appointments with probation officers and pay 100 prosecution costs.
B&Q pliers thief is jailed
A thief who stole a pair of pliers from B&Q has been sent to jail.
Karl Austin Burnett, 36, of Grizedale Crescent, Ribbleton, Preston, admitted stealing the pliers, worth 9.98, and was jailed for seven days.
Man admits race charge
A Preston man who admitted using racially harassing words was fined 50.
Gary Birkett, 23, of Windermere Road, Fulwood, pleaded guilty to the offence before magistrates in Preston.
He was also ordered to pay a 15 victim surcharge.
Shoplifter stole chocolate
A shoplifter stole crisps and chocolate worth 5.39 from Booths.
Steven Gorvrett, 32, of no fixed abode, admitted theft at Preston Magistrates Court. He was given a community order and told to pay 75 costs.
Discharge for whisky theft
A Leyland woman who stole whisky from BHS in Preston worth 40 has been given a conditional discharge.
Angela Craigie, 34, of Golden Hill Lane, was also ordered to pay compensation of 40 by Preston Magistrates Court.

Novel way to display art
A former Lancashire bookshop has been transformed into an art gallery.
Kaydee Bookshop, Clitheroe, is showcasing the work of local artists and the works are changed each month.
Ian Lloyd, of Mortimers Estate Agency, and Jo Harding, of Clitheroe Books, are behind the move and say it is proving a huge success.
Talk about a favourite book
Garstang Library's Chatterbooks is held every Thursday at the library in Windsor Drive.
The group, which is held from 3.45pm to 4.45pm, is for children aged seven to nine years to talk about the books they have been reading.

Deodorant sparks fire
Underarm deodorant sparked a fire scare at a hospice.
Firecrews from Bamber Bridge were called to St Catherine's Hospice in Lostock Hall after a fire alarm was triggered.
It was caused by fumes from the deodorant triggering the fire alarm sensors.
Home filled with smoke
A home was smoke logged after a fire broke out in a gas boiler.
The incident happened at 6.32pm on Monday at a home in Lytham Road, Warton.
Two fire crews were sent to the property and firefighters in breathing apparatus used hose reels to bring the blaze under control. The ground floor and first floor of the home were left heavily smoke logged.
