Laptops help kids in care

Free laptops have been handed out to almost 600 Lancashire youngsters in care.

The computers have been distributed by Lancashire County Council's "virtual school for children in care" which aims to ensure children who are looked after "achieve their full academic potential".

The scheme focuses on teenagers aged 11 to 18 who have been in care for more than six months and encourages them to use an educational website.

Walk around town's history

Get some exercise and learn about Leyland's history.

A medieval Leyland walk will take place on Saturday March 27, starting from the South Ribble Museum and Exhibition Centre, in Leyland, at 11am.

Talent show duo success

Preston duo Cocoshackle are to compete in the regional final of the country's biggest music talent competition, Live and Unsigned 2010.

Daisy Wignall and Alex Molyneux won through the auditions to the next stage, the live show at Salford's Willows on Sunday, before a large audience and professional judges.

If they win, they will go to the Live and Unsigned Festival at London's 02.

The national winners get a recording and management contract with Future Music and investment of up to 30, 000 to release

a single.

Car crash pair cut free

An elderly man and woman had to be cut free from their car in Tarleton when it ended up on its side after being in collision with a motorbike.

The incident, at Bank Bridge on the A59, happened just after 3.20pm

on Sunday.

Firefighters cut the

roof off the car and the pair were taken to Southport Hospital.

They were not thought to be badly injured.

The man riding the motorbike was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Charity night

A grand charity evening is held in Lostock Hall tonight. The event is at Lostock Hall Conservative Club from 8pm, with entertainment from Jimmy Rogers and the Mary Whelan Irish Dancers. There will be a raffle and bingo. Tickets are 3.50 each and are available on the door. Proceeds go to Galloways Society for the Blind.

New Media Factory

A UK first has arrived in Preston which is set to transform the region's 15 billion digital and creative industries. The Media Factory, University of Central Lancashire's digital and media hub, will become home to a new Media Access Bureau.

It will allow digital and creative companies in the city flexible, pay as you go access to a superfast digital network and industry-standard editing equipment.

The facilities are delivered through the NorthernNet project, developed to help create.

Team banks on Trust

A team from one of the region's biggest business banks has raised 66,393 for the Prince's Trust – and been crowned the best in the North West for its efforts.

The business and commercial banking team from Royal Bank of Scotland, including staff from its branches in Preston and Lancaster, finished ahead of Yell which raised 50,906 for the charity's Million Makers challenge.

Woman hurt in smash

Three vehicles were involved in a crash in Preston.

It happened on Blackpool Road, Ashton, at 2pm on Saturday.

One woman was treated by paramedics, complaining of neck pain.

Get walking

Get some fresh air and exercise at an organised health walk. A Gregson Lane Health Walk will start from the community centre, in Gregson Lane, Hoghton, at 1pm on Tuesday March 30. Call 01772 422316.

999 rescue for horse in ditch

Firefighters helped rescue a horse stuck in a ditch in Lancashire.

They were called to Lord's Lot Road, Over Kellet, Carnforth, at 8.45am on Monday.
