Young cadets rewarded for work

A group of police cadets have been recognised for their work in the community. Ellie Devereux and Mia Wilkinson, who were part of the cadet scheme in Lancashire Police’s northern division, will attend the awards ceremony to receive the Diana Champion Volunteer Award on July 2. They were handed the award for volunteer work they undertake at their local police station alongside under-raising for local charities. Cadet co-ordinator Kath Bromilow said: “The award will encourage them to continue their work and inspire others.”

Rockits to play with hero Gerry

Preston band The Rockits have landed a real dream of a gig - the 1960s inspired rockers are to support Gerry and the Pacemakers. The five-piece this year won a residency at the legendary Cavern Club and are about to headline the club’s 1960s Review Show which runs on Sundays from the end of this month, But they heard this week that they have been chosen to open up for the Ferry Across the Mersey star at this year’s International Beatle Week in Liverpool from August 22 to 28.

Housing plans for prime garage site

Plans have been unveiled to demolish a car garage for a housing development. The owner of the Barkers Garage site on Tulketh Brow, Ashton has submitted proposals to turn the building into six terraced homes. It would see homes built around the area facing onto surrounding roads. In its proposal, the applicant said the slowdown in the market had led the owner to decide not to continue trading. The applicant said he would close the business as soon as consent was granted to allow the development to begin immediately and said it was expected to be “attractive.”

Blood needed this Thursday

Blood donation sessions will be held at South Ribble Civic Centre in Leyland on Thursday. People can give blood at the centre in West Paddock from either 2pm to 4pm or 5pm to 7.30pm. The sessions are run by NHS Blood and Transplant. Call 0300 123 23 23 to book an appointment.

Fashion legend to visit Preston

Renowned menswear designer Jeff Banks is coming to the Debenhams store in Preston at noon on Wednesday. The fashion king will visit the shop in the Fishergate Centre, which has undergone a multi-million pound modernisation, to style three men from St Catherine’s Hospice and one lucky shopper.

Tower market anniversary do

The 10th anniversary of Hoghton Tower’s farmers market will be celebrated this Sunday. The Merchant of Hoghton food producers’ market, which has more than 50 stall holders in the Great Barn, will run from 10am to 2pm.

Bus switch for road closure

Bus services will be diverted when a busy Preston road shuts for a week. Preston Bus has confirmed its numbers 22/23 service will be diverted via Lytham Road and Garstang Road when Black Bull Lane shuts on Saturday. Its 88a/88c Orbit service will also be re-routed. The road is shut for resurfacing from Cadley Causeway and Queen’s Drive.

Car destroyed outside homes

A car was gutted after a fire broke out in the engine compartment. Firefighters were called to the incident on Leyland Road, Penwortham at around 1am yesterday after residents were awoken by “popping” noises. The engine compartment was gutted by heat and flames.

Baxi to pick up Queen’s award

A Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire will hand over a major business award. Lord Shuttleworth will visit Baxi’s head office on Club Street on Wednesday, July 25 to hand the company the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
