£2,000 boost for city park

A playing field in Lancaster has received a £2,000 grant. Slyne-with-Hest Parish Council will use the cash from the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge fund to make improvements at the recreation ground in the village, near Lancaster. The fund aims to protect 2,000 parks.

Ted Robbins at charity bash

Comedian Ted Robbins will be the star attraction at a charity cabaret night this weekend. The Phoenix Nights star will be at the St Gerard’s Hall on Brownedge Road, Lostock Hall from 12pm on Sunday. The free event will raise cash for Help for Heroes.

Meeting date for ME group

Central Lancashire ME Support Group will hold its next meeting on Wednesday 1 February. The event will take place between 7pm and 9pm at Bamber Bridge Methodist Church on Station Road. Call Paul on 01772 378685.

Learn to surf net

Free computer sessions for beginners will take place on board the Citizen zone vehicle on Tuesday January 17. The event will take place in the car park of the Sherwood Pub on Sherwood Way, Fulwood, Preston. With the help of experienced staff, people can learn the basics of how to use a computer, browse the internet and use e-mail. The free sessions will take place between 9.30am and 11.30am. Health staff raise funds for public

Staff at Lancashire Care Foundation Trust raised more than £4,000 towards a hospital Christmas Fund for people spending the festive period in hospital. Finance workers Michelle Heise and Vicky McDonald organised their own fashion show, tombola and raffle. John Keaveny, network director for adult mental health services, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and made such a difference to so many service users’ Christmases. The staff acknowledged that being in hospital can leave people feeling isolated and wanted to ensure that festive cheer was spread throughout the wards.”

Museum culture day

Artists at a Preston gallery will be gearing up for Chinese New Year with a day full of workshops. The Harris Museum and Art Gallery is hosting the cultural sessions on Saturday January 21. Visitors can play traditional Chinese games including jianzi, watch a Ti Chi demonstration and have a go at making lanterns for the Chinese New Year parade. The museum will be decked out with Chinese decorations for the events, which run from 11am to 4pm.

Pensioner rescued from roof

An elderly woman was rescued from the roof of her home after breaking her ankle. The 65-year-old had to be lifted off the roof of her house on Out Lane in Croston, near Leyland, shortly after 1.30pm yesterday. It is believed she had been on the roof of the property doing some DIY. Crew manager Chris Blackburn, of Leyland fire station, said: “She was doing some repairs that she had done many times before. “She slipped and broke her ankle and had to be rescued from the roof.” She was treated by ambulance crews and firefighters at the scene before being taken to Chorley and South Ribble General Hospital.

Plan on the cards

Hundreds of people gave feedback on a new development masterplan for South Ribble, the borough council has said. Residents were asked for their views on a list of sites earmarked for new homes and facilities as part of the local development framework (LDF). A revised version will be drawn up this year following the feedback received. Coun Cliff Hughes, cabinet member for strategic planning, said:“The end result will be a local plan which will set out how the area will grow and services will be provided in a co-ordinated way.”
