Chorley Council bestowed the honour to mark the regiment’s close association with Chorley and to recognise the service its officers and soldiers have given to the borough.

There was a special council meeting on Saturday followed by a service at St Laurence’s Church.

Afterwards, the regiment assembled and the Mayor of Chorley, Coun Marion Lowe, presented them with a freedom scroll.

The soldiers marched from St Thomas’ Square and through the town centre, led by the Royal Engineers Band and ceremonial police forces.
