Social worker stabbed to death was father-of-three

A social worker who was stabbed to death during a visit to a Preston home has been named.

Philip Ellison, a 47-year-old married father of three sons, was stabbed while visiting a home in Glebe Close, Fulwood, on Monday morning.

Mr Ellison, of Leyland Road in Penwortham, was a social worker in adult care for Lancashire County Council.

He was attacked during a visit to a supported housing scheme, which helps people recover from mental health problems.

Police arrived at 11.30am on Monday after receiving calls from worried neighbours.

A 51-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is due to be interviewed on Tuesday.

Mr Ellison was said to have suffered multiple stab wounds and later died of his injuries.

A post-mortem examination is due to be held on Tuesday morning.

Det Supt Steve Brunskill, of Lancashire Police, said: "This was a tragic incident and my condolences go to the family.

"A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently detained at Preston Police Station.

"We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident, which was confined to the address at Glebe Close.

"A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on the deceased tomorrow morning which will establish the cause of death, although I can confirm that Mr Ellison had received a number of stab wounds."
