Football legend Sir Tom Finney was described as uniting the people of Preston at his funeral today.
At the funeral, held at Preston’s Minster, Father Timothy Lipscombe, Vicar of Preston, gave thanks for the footballing legend’s humilty and compassion on and off the pitch.
He said: “In his life, and even in his death, Sir Tom has united the people of Preston. Everyone has a cherished and lovely story to tell about him.”
Jimmy Armfield, former Blackpool FC player and friend of Sir Tom, said he served the country during the war and served it just as well on the football field.
He added: “He won the hearts of his team players, quite often the opponents and the supporters.”
