Sir Tom Finney is to be given a full civic funeral – the biggest that Preston has ever seen.
The city’s favourite son will be laid to rest next Thursday, with all the pomp and ceremony befitting a national sporting legend.
Members of the Finney family have responded to the clamour for a public funeral which is accessible to the thousands who want to pay their respects.
The service will be held at Preston Minster at 1pm, with the city centre likely to come to a standstill as crowds converge on Church Street.
It is expected thousands more will be able to say a tearful farewell to their hero in Deepdale, as his cortege passes the club he graced as its greatest player and later as its finest ambassador.
The Finney family have then asked for a private interment.
Full details of the funeral will be finalised in the next few days after talks involving the local authority, Lancashire Constabulary, the Football Association and Preston North End.
