Shop bids to regain its alcohol licence

The first shop in Preston to be stripped of its booze licence is bidding to sell drink again.

Chandra Limbachia has applied for a licence to sell alcohol from SG&N Newsagents in Ashton.

The Watery Lane shop lost its licence last year after it was caught selling alcohol to underage drinkers during a police and Trading Standards test purchasing operation.

Now Mr Limbachia wants a premises licence to allow alcohol to be sold every day between 7am and 11pm.

When the shop's licence was revoked by Preston Council's councillors in April 2007, a Town Hall hearing was told the premises had an "appalling record" of selling alcohol to under-18s.

Alcohol was sold to underage drinkers five times in four years at the shop run by BAE Systems engineer Satish Limbachia, councillors were told.

Sgt Tony Durber, from the licensing unit at Preston Police, said: "Given the history, we will be looking at it and we will make a decision then.

"It won't be a knee-jerk reaction – it will be a measured reaction.

"We will make any inquiries we think are appropriate."

Any objections to the granting of the licence should be raised with Preston Council by December 1.

Members of the council's licensing committee will then be asked to decide whether the licence should be granted.

Katherine Parry, principal licensing officer at Preston Council, said: "If there are still issues in relation to the running of the premises, I'm sure we'll get representations.

"The police will look at the whole picture, not just the individual person.

"It's the actual history of the premises and any issues surrounding that which will have to be addressed by the police."

No-one from SG&N Newsagents was available for comment.
