Sex liaison mental health patient jailed

A prisoner who got a therapist pregnant during a sexual liaison in a psychiatric unit was sent to jail – as she went into labour.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, got involved in a public order incident while on a brief home release from the Guild Lodge medium secure unit in Lancashire.

The 20-year-old defendant admitted an offence of affray in June last year after he got involved in an incident where others kicked and punched a man.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Preston Crown Court yesterday.

Last month, Stephanie Reeves, 30, of Delph Street, Wigan, who had sex with him in gym toilets at Whittingham Hospital, near Preston, was sentenced by the same judge.

She was given 12 months in jail, suspended for two years, with two years supervision, after pleading guilty to sexual activity with a person who has a mental disorder who was in her care.

As the victim of that offence, he cannot be named.

The court heard that married Reeves, a psychologist, had been escorting him to the gym when they had sex in the toilets.

Amanda Johnson, prosecuting, said that at the time of the affray last summer he was an in-patient at Guild Lodge.

He was allowed home on release on a Saturday morning and returned on the Sunday evening with some minor injuries.

He had previous convictions for offences of battery, affray, and unlawful wounding.

His barrister, Richard Haworth, said the defendant had been kept in Ashworth Hospital.

He also told the court: "His intended partner has gone into labour this morning.

"Even now he may have become a father."
